    In speaking about adversity, John F. Kennedy vowed that “…we shall bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, and oppose any foe”.  Though at the time these words related to global diplomacy, they nonetheless stand as a mantra for the lawyers of McNally Gervan.  When it comes to your case, we will support you in every way possible and zealously advocate on your behalf.  In this blog, we will discuss what to do when an accident occurs and what to look for when meeting with a lawyer for the first time.

    What To Do When an Accident Occurs

    A personal injury accident of any kind is traumatic.  The associated physical and emotional strain is not only harrowing, but it can also make the personal injury law landscape seem overwhelming.  However, McNally Gervan knows the lay of the land and is here to help you navigate your way back to a healthier life.

    If you have been injured in an accident, the first and most important step is to seek immediate medical treatment for your injuries; your health and well-being is paramount.  If possible, we also recommend that you take the following steps:

    • If you are in a car accident, note the name, address, phone number, driver’s license, car make and model, and insurance details for all parties involved in the accident;

    • If you have car insurance, report the accident to your insurer within seven (7) days of the accident; and

    • If you do not have car insurance, report the accident to the insurer of the at-fault party immediately.

    • If you are involved in a slip-and-fall or other type of personal injury accident, take photographs of the accident scene conditions at the time of your accident.  Also note details about the location where your accident occurred and any information to help identify potentially responsible parties (house number, street name, commercial sign).

    What to Look For When Meeting With a Lawyer For the First Time

    When meeting or speaking with a lawyer for the first time, you should look for the following characteristics and behaviours:

    • Strong experience and expertise in the area of law which relates to your personal injury (for example, motor vehicle accidents, slip-and-falls, bicycling);

    • Openly providing a detailed explanation of the legal fees and costs (personal injury cases typically operate on a contingency fee basis; ask your lawyer to explain all aspects of this arrangement);

    • The ability to listen, explain, and fully appreciate all aspects of your case (you should trust your lawyer and feel confident in their abilities);

    • Patience, compassion, and understanding;

    • Striking a balance between obtaining as much relevant information as possible from you and providing you with sufficient information to make you feel more comfortable with the process.

    The lawyers at McNally Gervan are as experienced as they are attentive, diligent, patient, compassionate, and understanding.  With rich expertise in all areas of personal injury law, McNally Gervan will not only strive to ensure the success of your case, but will also make you as comfortable as possible with the personal injury claim process.  We look forward to hearing from you and, more importantly, to helping you.
