Brain Injury Recover
The process of recovering from a concussion requires that brain cells need to get restored to normal functioning through rebalancing levels of certain chemicals that affect calcium and sodium both inside and outside the cell. This process consumes enormous energy, so it is crucial to conserve it throughout recovery. If appropriately managed, most concussion symptoms should disappear within a few weeks. However, over-exertion of brain cells during recovery could result in symptoms that last for months or even years—a substantial percentage (estimates range from 10% to 30%) of concussion sufferers have a prolonged recovery process called Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS).
After a concussion, individuals may experience persistent symptoms, like issues with concentration and memory, mood shifts, personality changes, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, and excessive drowsiness.
In the course of recovery, the brain becomes more susceptible to re-injury. In rare instances, an additional concussion that occurs during recovery could result in the brain experiencing massive swelling. Second Impact Syndrome is the name of this unusual condition (SIS). About 50% of SIS patients die due to their injuries. Those who are survivors get left with lifelong impairment.
